GPS Spoofing

GPS spoofing is a method used by hackers to confuse GPS systems. In this tactic, hackers transmit signals similar to those emitted by a GPS. 

From there, they code the signals in such a way as to trick receivers into thinking they’re in a different location. Someone conducting this spoofing attack wants to lie to a GPS receiver by broadcasting incorrect signals masked as authentic ones. 

Another spoofing approach transmits genuine signals with an incorrect timestamp. The spoof hacker then modifies these signals, so the receiver believes the position to be different than it actually is. Alternatively, this attack makes them think the GPS is in the right place at an inaccurate time.

Most often, this technique is utilized by military organizations. For example, recent reports show that Russia frequently used GPS spoofing to change coordinates in the Black Sea. 

GPS Signal Jamming

GPS spoofing is generally a military operation. In contrast, anybody can use GPS jamming with ease. All they need is a jamming device.

Jammer devices confuse GPS receivers by emitting radio signals at the same frequency as the GPS system. As a result, the GPS can no longer determine its precise location.

It doesn’t take a criminal mastermind to think of uses for this technology. On a small-scale level, teenagers might use a GPS signal jammer to prevent their parents from monitoring their location. 

However, there are more serious threats posed by GPS jammers as well. For example, most cases in the US involving jammers involve work situations.

In many cases, truck drivers and other jobs requiring transport use jammers to lie about their locations. These jammers make it difficult for employers to monitor the positions of their fleet vehicles.

Most signal jammers require little power and can activate and deactivate with ease. As a result, jamming capabilities can wreak havoc on a company’s reliability. 

For this reason, the US made it illegal to use, sell, or market jamming technology. A violation of this law can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
